Putin, Ramaphosa Discuss Ukraine Resolution
South Africa’s presidency confirmed on social media that Putin updated Ramaphosa on Russia’s commitment to a peaceful resolution, highlighting Pretoria’s longstanding position that all wars should end through negotiation. South Africa has previously offered to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, with the conflict approaching its fifth year.
During the call, both leaders agreed to support the return of South African nationals involved alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, with coordination teams from both countries continuing efforts to implement the plan.
Putin and Ramaphosa also emphasized the importance of ongoing coordination between Russia and South Africa, including collaboration within the G20 and BRICS groupings. The leaders discussed expanding bilateral economic relations, with Ramaphosa expressing interest in advancing a mutually beneficial trade and investment framework under the Russia-South Africa comprehensive strategic partnership. Trade between the two nations is primarily focused on South African exports of food products and capital equipment.
