South Africa’s Tourism Sector Reaches Record High

(MENAFN) South Africa’s tourism industry celebrated a historic milestone in 2025, welcoming more than 10 million international travelers.

Authorities highlighted that this achievement demonstrates the sector’s vital role in driving economic expansion and generating employment opportunities.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille reported that the nation saw 10.48 million international arrivals from January to December 2025, marking a 17.6% rise compared to 2024 and setting a new all-time record.

”Tourism is working. Tourism is delivering. And tourism will remain a cornerstone of inclusive growth, investment, and job creation in South Africa,” De Lille stated.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, the Minister underlined that tourism policy is inherently economic policy. She pointed to a robust recovery, heightened investor confidence, and the creation of more employment prospects within the industry.

The Department of Tourism noted that South Africa’s global attractiveness received an additional boost after the country was named Best Destination: Africa 2025 by the Travel Weekly Reader’s Choice Awards.

”This achievement reflects deliberate policy choices, focused implementation, and strong collaboration between the Government and the private sector,” De Lille added.

The Cabinet has approved a Tourism Growth Partnership Plan, developed in collaboration with industry stakeholders, to stimulate further growth.

A key element of this initiative is simplifying travel to South Africa, including introducing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system in strategic markets such as India, China, Mexico, and Indonesia.
